The People of Hong Kong

The people of Hong Kong are usually referred to as “Hongkongers,” which means people who originated from this country. However, the term Hongkongers is also used for people who are permanent residents with identity cards and those who have spend a significant period of time in this country. Hongkongers are made up greatly of Han Chinese, mostly from Guangdong, China. Hong Kong used to be a British colony and since then a lot of people from mainland China have immigrated here. That is why Cantonese people represent the largest group in Hong Kong and so its culture is highly influenced by them.
