Agriculture in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, as being a highly industrialised country, imports most of its agricultural produce from mainland China. This is because Hong Kong consists largely of steep and unproductive hillside. Although Hong Kong can produce agricultural products, it can only be enough for 20% of the local population. In fact, Hong Kong has always been dependent on imports from mainland China and other neighbouring nations. However, despite this fact, two lucrative activities have become dominant with a total value of 93 percent of crops grown in 1998 and these are vegetable farming and flower growing. On the other hand, fishing and animal husbandry also contribute to this sector with its products meeting a significant portion of demands for seafood and livestock products.
